Where to Start With Silent Hill: Which Games to Play and How

New to Silent Hill? Which entries stand alone, the best starting points, how to play older games legally in 2026, and an order for completionists.

Silent Hill can look intimidating from the outside. The series spans more than a quarter of a century, several developers, a long hiatus, a famous cancelled project and a revival that has produced three major releases in barely two years. The good news is that, unlike many long-running franchises, Silent Hill is mostly standalone. You do not need to play everything in order, and the best entry points are the newest games.

This guide explains which games connect to which, where newcomers should start, how to access older entries legally on current hardware as of October 2026, and a suggested route for anyone who wants to play the lot. For the full background, see our Silent Hill series history.

Is Silent Hill One Continuous Story?

Not really. Silent Hill is closer to an anthology than a saga. Most games follow a new protagonist who is drawn to (or trapped in) the fog-bound town for personal reasons, and the town reshapes itself around their guilt, fear or trauma. That means each entry is designed to be understood on its own.

There are a few exceptions worth knowing:

  • Silent Hill (1999) and Silent Hill 3 (2003) form a direct pair. The third game continues the story of the first, so play them in that order if you can.
  • Silent Hill: Origins (2007) is a prequel to the first game and makes most sense after it.
  • Silent Hill 4: The Room (2004) contains small nods to earlier games, but works fine alone.
  • Silent Hill 2, Homecoming, Downpour, Shattered Memories, Silent Hill f and Townfall are standalone stories.

Shattered Memories (2009) deserves a note: it reimagines the first game’s premise from scratch rather than continuing it. Silent Hill f (2025) is explicitly described as a standalone spin-off and does not even take place in the town of Silent Hill.

The Best Starting Points in 2026

Option 1: Silent Hill 2 (2024 remake)

For most people, this is the place to start. Developed by Bloober Team and published by Konami, the remake launched on October 8, 2024, for PlayStation 5 and Windows, and came to Xbox Series X/S on November 21, 2025. It rebuilds the 2001 classic with a modern third-person camera and updated combat while keeping the story of James Sunderland, who comes to Silent Hill after receiving a letter from his wife — who died three years earlier.

Silent Hill 2 is widely regarded as the series’ masterpiece, and it requires no prior knowledge. It also offers multiple endings shaped by how you play, which gives it real replay value.

Option 2: Silent Hill f (2025)

If you prefer something completely fresh, Silent Hill f released on September 25, 2025, on PS5, Xbox Series X/S and Windows. Developed by NeoBards Entertainment and written by Ryukishi07, it moves the series to 1960s rural Japan, following high school student Hinako Shimizu in the fictional town of Ebisugaoka. There are no firearms; combat is melee-focused, with dodging, parrying and weapons that break. It is a good choice if you enjoy Japanese folk horror or more demanding action.

Option 3: Silent Hill: Townfall (2026)

The newest entry, Silent Hill: Townfall, released on September 24, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Windows (the PC version reached GOG on October 9, 2026). Developed by Scottish studio Screen Burn Interactive and published by Konami and Annapurna Interactive, it is set in 1996 on the fictional Scottish island town of St. Amelia and is the first major Silent Hill game played in first person throughout. Critics gave it generally favourable reviews, though several singled out its stealth sections as a weak point. Choose it if you want the latest take on the formula and like first-person horror.

How to Play the Older Games Legally

This is the awkward part. As of October 2026, most of the classic entries are not sold on current-generation digital storefronts. Here is what we could confirm:

Game Original platforms Legal options we could verify
Silent Hill (1999) PlayStation Released digitally on PS3 and PSP via PlayStation Network from 2009; original discs
Silent Hill 2 (2001) / Silent Hill 3 (2003) PS2, Xbox, Windows Silent Hill HD Collection (2012, PS3 and Xbox 360), backward compatible on Xbox One since July 2018; original discs
Silent Hill 4: The Room (2004) PS2, Xbox, Windows Sold DRM-free on GOG, updated through the GOG Preservation Program (a 2025 update restored missing hauntings)
Silent Hill: Origins (2007) PSP, PS2 Original hardware and discs
Silent Hill: Homecoming (2008) PS3, Xbox 360, Windows Backward compatible on Xbox One since July 2018; original PC release was via Steam in the Americas
Shattered Memories (2009) Wii, PS2, PSP Original hardware and discs
Silent Hill: Downpour (2012) PS3, Xbox 360 Original hardware and discs

A few practical notes:

  • Check storefronts yourself before buying. Digital availability changes, and older store listings can be removed or regionally restricted without much notice.
  • The HD Collection is controversial. It received mixed to negative reviews for technical problems, and a planned Xbox 360 patch was cancelled, with Konami offering refunds to Xbox 360 owners. Many fans still prefer the original PS2 releases of 2 and 3.
  • Silent Hill 4 on GOG is the easiest classic to play on a modern PC, with modern controller support added through updates.
  • Remakes may change this picture. Konami has a remake of the first game in development at Bloober Team, but as of October 2026 it has no confirmed release date.

Suggested Order for Completionists

If you want to play everything you can reasonably get hold of, this route balances story connections with quality:

  1. Silent Hill (1999) — the original, essential for understanding 3.
  2. Silent Hill 2 — either the 2024 remake or the original; many fans eventually play both.
  3. Silent Hill 3 — the direct sequel to the first game.
  4. Silent Hill 4: The Room — the strangest of the Team Silent era, with an apartment you cannot leave.
  5. Silent Hill: Origins — a prequel by Climax Studios; best after the first game.
  6. Silent Hill: Homecoming (Double Helix Games) and Downpour (Vatra Games) — the Western-developed entries, divisive but worth seeing for context.
  7. Shattered Memories — Climax’s psychological reimagining of the first game’s premise.
  8. Silent Hill f and Townfall — the modern revival, in either order.

Optional extras include P.T. (2014), the playable teaser for the cancelled Silent Hills, which was pulled from the PlayStation Store and can only be run on PS4 consoles where it was already downloaded; Silent Hill: The Short Message (2024), a short experience on PS5; and Silent Hill: Ascension, an interactive streaming series that ran from October 2023 to April 2024.

Release Order vs. Story Order

Because the series is mostly standalone, release order works well and lets you see how the games evolved. If you prefer story order, the main difference is placing Origins before the first game. We would not recommend that for first-timers, though: Origins assumes you already know the original’s characters and twists, and it spoils some of them.

Tips for New Silent Hill Players

  • Read everything. Notes, newspaper clippings and graffiti carry much of the story.
  • Use the map. Every Silent Hill game relies on the protagonist annotating maps with locked doors and clues.
  • Turn off the flashlight sometimes. In the classic games, darkness can help you avoid monsters, and the radio static warns you when they are near.
  • Do not rush to fight. Many encounters are optional, and running past enemies is often smarter.
  • Avoid spoilers. The series depends on reveals. Look up puzzle solutions if you must, but avoid story summaries until you finish.

Frequently Asked Questions

If I play the Silent Hill 2 remake, do I need the original?

No. The remake tells the same story and is a complete experience on its own. Some fans like to try the original afterwards to compare its fixed camera angles, pacing and atmosphere, but it is optional.

Do the new games spoil the old ones?

Silent Hill f and Townfall tell new, self-contained stories, so they do not depend on knowledge of earlier entries. The one pairing where order matters is Silent Hill and Silent Hill 3, because the latter reveals what happened after the first game.

Which Silent Hill game is the least intense for a nervous newcomer?

Fear is personal, but a game you can pause, adjust and play in short sessions is usually easier to handle. Whatever you pick, playing with the lights on and the volume a little lower is a perfectly valid way to start.

Is the Silent Hill 1 remake out yet?

As of October 2026, no. A remake of the first game is in development at Bloober Team, but Konami has not confirmed a release date.
